THE SOUND OF A GOING

TEXT: 2 Samuel 5:22-25

22 And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in
the valley of Rephaim.
23 And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go
up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.
24 And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the
tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.
25 And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the
Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer. (KJV)

Acts 2:1-4
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with
one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing
mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and
it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak
with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (KJV)

INTRODUCTION:

Movement. Action. Stirring. Some sign of life. The church has to have it!
When revival comes, things won't continue to sit still and motionless.
You will hear the "sound of a going." There will be a stirring in the heart as the Spirit works in the inner man. Hearts will be knit together. People will become of one spirit. The body of Christ will sound like a marching army as God breathes life into its members!

But this like must come form God. The "sound of a going" must be a
sound sent from heaven giving victory to God's people. It must not be
produced by human effort, or defeat is certain.

Revival has a distinct sound, A recognizable sound. Those whose ears
are in tune with God know the difference between the genuine move of God and that which human efforts produces. The church's goal is not to create excitement or even to get everyone involved. It's goal is to present an atmosphere which God can inhabit. It is not just wanting something exciting to happen. The true church wants God to move!

I. TARRY YE... UNTIL YE BE ENDUED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH!

David's instructions as he sat beside the mulberry tree were to wait until God manifested Himself by the blowing of the wind in the tops of the trees. His success was in knowing how to wait. If we would learn to wait upon God until He endues us whit His power, our impossible tasks would quickly become possible.
God's plan for His people is never defeat. But God's plan is for
ultimate victory for His people that will glorify Him.

Over 500 people at one time gathered to hear Jesus after His resurrection. But only 120 were found waiting in faith and obedience in
the upper room when the Spirit of God fell. Christ's followers had all
clearly been given the great commission to take the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
Some understood, at least in part, the responsibility that had been placed in their hands. And they were also very aware of the last few works Jesus had spoken before His ascension into heaven. They were to wait for heaven-sent power.
The victory would come when the moving of God's Spirit came.

Ten days of prayer and supplication by the faithful 120 prepared their
hearts for the mighty fire of the Holy Spirit. Instantly, they were endued.
Instantly, fruit came forth for their labors. If they had gone out and tried to accomplish the work without the enduement of power, the book of Acts would read quite differently. It would be a depressing account of a people living in fear and failure. Its contents would be uninspiring and discouraging. The large number of new converts on the Day of Pentecost, the mighty healings that took place as the shadow of Peter passed by, and the many other signs and wonders would all be absent. In their place we would read only about a struggling group trying to do something without the power to do it.

ILLUSTRATION:

Most homes are connected to a water main. This supplies the house with  adequate water for normal life. But suppose a fire breaks out. Then firemen tap a nearby   hydrant to secure a much greater flow of water to meet the emergency. To be "full" of  the Spirit is like a house supplied continuously with adequate water. But to be "filled" on
occasion, as the apostles were in Acts 4:31, is to be given extra energy
and power for  special service. "And when they had prayed, -- they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak the word of God with boldness" (Acts 4:31). For the special task of  persisting in evangelism, even when the religious leadership violently opposed them, the  apostles needed a special filling of God's power. They had been "full of the Spirit" all along.
Now they needed "extra filling" to meet the extra demands on them. - Dr. Merrill C. Tenney

And today it is still true: the stirring the church needs is not that which
comes from our enthusiasm or our efforts to get everyone excited. It
must come from God. Only then will the armies of the enemy be slain in a spectacular display of His power.

II. WHEN GOD MOVES, SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN

There was a sound from heaven that came on the Day of Pentecost
(Acts 2:2). It sounded like a mighty rushing wind. It was the Spirit of God visiting His people. AS the Spirit filled the 120 followers of Christ, they began tosound forth His praises. To study the account given of this first outpouring of the Spirit on the new born church, one can only conclude that the church was full of activity.
The news spread quickly. The city gathered to see what was taking place.

There was a sound coming forth from the upper room that was shaking
Jerusalem! The activity on that day was not being produced by those in
the upper room but by the Spirit of God moving on them and through them!
They were simply yielded vessels who wanted God more than anything else in the world.

ILLUSTRATION:
At the turn of the century, James Burns wrote the book Revivals: The Laws and Leaders.
In the opening chapter he discusses "laws" of revival, as well as the
"laws" of the absence of revival.
"The first tendency," he writes, "Is for the doctrine of the church to
lose its power of convicting the conscience, convincing the mind, or moving the heart." He goes on to point out that spiritual decay  brings with it a formality of worship in which the "ritual" is so exalted that it crushes the spirit.

1Thes 1:5
5 For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost,  and in much assurance; (KJV)

Today's church often has the outward appearance of something happening. It likes sound. It likes activity. It likes movement. Its
zealousness is to be admired. But it has lacked the patience and the spiritual hunger to wait upon God for the genuine moving of His Spirit.

If a sound from heaven would suddenly rush through our churches,
whole communities would sit up and take notice. The Spirit of God draws people. He moves hearts. He arrests all attention when His power is in the midst of the house.

The fact that so many were saved on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2)
due to the great move of God's Spirit should cause us to seek that same power they received. If we had a genuine move of the Spirit in our churches, without doubt something exciting would happen. You cannot have a genuine move of God without some eternal good taking place in people's hearts and lives.

Did the 120 know what to expect when he Spirit fell upon them?
They had certainly read of God's Spirit falling on certain individuals at
different times  in the Old Testament. They had a little understanding of what to expect.
But it is doubtful they dreamed of receiving even a portion of the tremendous dynamo of God which fell upon them as they waited in the upper room!

Surely, they had to have been astonished but not in the he least
disappointed by what they were feeling in their souls! They mighty power of God lifted their hearts to an ecstasy about which they had never even dreamed!
Their entire lives were changed! The Gospel suddenly meant everything.
They had been fearful before the Spirit came; now they dared the enemy to try to stop what was happening in their lives! The unlearned, unschooled fishermen among them with no hesitation or intimidation, spoke boldly before the untouchable religious hierarchy. A deeper study of what took place in their lives after this tremendous move of God would send us to our knees, beseeching God for our Pentecost and for a new infilling of that same eternal power!

III. GOD WILL WORK, BUT WHO WILL LET HIM?

What would really happen if God would so move among us today?
What would take place in our churches? How many souls in our communities would we win forth Lord? What types of new outreaches would be motivated by such a visitation of God?

Do we think that God still desires to move mightily among us? Or
do we think that He prefers we struggle along in our own weakness and
feebleness?
Does he delight in our ineffectiveness? Or would He delight to pour out His Spirit once again in these last days upon a church which so desperately needs Him?

When David heard the sound in the tops of the mulberry trees, he knew it was God. And he went forward and won the battle. The enemy has no chance when God is moving. We spend so much time trying to make things work.
But we fail to realize that only He can make things work.

CLOSING:

I am afraid that most of us do not realize how great our victories could be if only we had a moving of God's Spirit. The work of God to be
accomplished in these last hours of the harvest will surely be done through people who have been moved by God Himself.

All of our religious motion has produced so little. We need to wait upon Him until again a sound from on high sweeps through our congregations and brings a new victory to the work of God!
